Colour
What color tiles to choose in a small bathroom? Here you need to remember the laws of color perception in small rooms. Designers are advised to use light and bright shades of the primary colors, and the room should not be completely decorated in one tone.
It is better to select material of the same color, but in two, three or four tones with a decrease. This option will allow you to cover short walls with lighter samples, and large ones with darker ones, which will visually change the overall perception and visually expand the space.
For the ceiling, it is best to use white tile without shades. You can also arrange the upper part of the walls, and to visually increase the height of the ceiling, use separate vertical inserts of dark elements. The same dark inserts located horizontally allow you to visually push the walls.
Any dark tones will play to reduce the volume, so they are not recommended for use in small rooms.
Good color combinations
When choosing a material, one must take into account not only the color perception of wall decoration, but also its harmonious combination with household appliances and sanitary ware. The following color combinations look good in a small room:
- shades of yellow, from bright and saturated, to barely noticeable, almost white;
- blue, or even light blue in the lower part of the wall goes well with a white top;
- light gray tones and white color are well combined on the wall;
- lighter shades of green also look good if you have darker tones below, and lighter tones on top of the wall;
- beige items harmonize well with brown ones;
- it will be interesting to look at the wall with the combination of a rich pink tile from below, to slightly pinkish, almost white in the upper part.
For zoning the room into functional zones, it is recommended to highlight each in a separate color or tone, but in a common color scheme.
To create a common interior, it is desirable to use bright accessories that are placed on the walls and plumbing.
Pleasant colors
There are traditional color options that are especially positively perceived by the human eye. It is most convenient to distribute them according to the created sensation:
- warm colors include shades of beige, yellow, sand and peach;
- shades of green, close to olive, blue or purple create a colder atmosphere in the room;
- Shades of white, pink, gray and lilac are considered neutral.
To design a small space, it is not recommended to mix shades of cold and warm tones. If you want to dilute a certain tone, it is better to do this with neutral colors.
In addition, grout plays an important role in the design of the bathroom. We examined this question in this article.
Dimensions
For rooms that are modest in size, it is recommended to select material also of small sizes. Large products on the wall will look heavy, in addition, rare seams will stand out clearly and disrupt the overall picture. Therefore, to design a small area of a bath or shower, you need to choose the size of the tile small or medium.
The following types of tile sizes for walls are available:
100x100 mm. A good option for decorating a bathroom, but it should be noted that material of this size must be selected in light colors (white, beige, light yellow). Otherwise, darker shades will visually reduce the already small space even more.
It is also possible to dilute a plain plain wall interspersed with a dark tile that matches the tone (for example, pick brown inserts for a light yellow tile).
Among the shortcomings of this size, the complexity of the installation process can be distinguished.
200x200 mm. As in the first case, when choosing a tile of this size, light tones should be preferred.
It is more convenient to work with 200x200 mm tiles than with 100x100 mm tiles, but the square size does not allow you to visually raise the ceiling, unlike rectangular tiles located vertically.
200x300 and more. Rectangular tile allows you to get the effect of raising the ceiling when laying it vertically. This is the optimal size for wall decoration in a small room. To finish a long and narrow room, tiles are laid horizontally, which gives the effect of expanding space.
Also, with low ceilings, it is recommended to arrange vertical stripes of rectangular tiles of a darker shade than the main tone of the wall, which gives a feeling of higher space.
Matte or Glossy
What tiles to choose for a small bathroom, matte or glossy? For rooms of a small area, it is recommended to use a glossy or mirror surface of tile. Glare arising from the reflection of light from a smooth surface, visually increase the volume.
However, choosing a tile with a glossy surface, you need to be prepared for more frequent cleaning - handprints and traces of dried water are clearly visible on a smooth surface.
Pattern or plain
When choosing a ceramic tile, it is important to consider the main features of the visual perception of the pattern on it indoors:
- a small drawing, an ornament on a single copy will organically look on the walls on a limited area of the bathroom in a small-sized "Khrushchev";
- a wall with a dimensional panel assembled from separate fragments will pull the focus on itself, leaving the rest of the space in the shade, which will visually reduce the volume of the room;
- An exception can only be narrow and long bathrooms, in which a bright volumetric pattern on the far end wall will help to increase the spaciousness;
- plain tiles also allow you to visually expand the volume of the room, but in this case, you need to take into account the advice of designers that you can only use light-colored products. Monophonic tiles look especially advantageous in showers.
Styling scheme
The visual perception of the bathroom space depends not only on the type of tile, its color or texture, but also on the way it is laid. The correct application of the laws of design will create the effect of spaciousness, even on a small area:
- The traditional way of laying without crossing joints. Laying is carried out at right angles without displacement of the elements. This option is perfect for mounting tiles of various colors in a small room;
- if it was decided to choose a plain material for the bathroom, designers recommend laying with an offset along the horizontal seam of half the tile;
- diagonal laying will help to increase the volume of a small room, but for the installation of such a finish an experienced craftsman will be needed, in addition, after performing such work there are many scraps of tiles.
For the traditional direct method of laying, you should purchase a rectangular tile and place it vertically. If the room is long and narrow, it is better to lay such a tile horizontally.
Other selection recommendations
Before choosing tiles for a small bathroom, the owners need to deal with the classification of this material and the features of each type.
There are two main classes of ceramic wall tiles:
- The first. Designed for surface treatment in rooms with low traffic, which just meets the requirements of a small bath.
- Second. In this case, the requirements for abrasion of the surface of the material are higher than that of the first class. Such tiles are laid in spacious rooms with high traffic, but it should be borne in mind that special household chemicals should be used to clean such products.
Other categories of ceramic tiles are used in other rooms and are not intended for installation in bathrooms or bathrooms combined with a toilet.
For laying on the floor, a special type of tile is used, which is able to withstand increased loads and not lose its qualities with increased traffic. Do not lay ceramic tiles intended for walls on the floor.
